MP agrees with rejection of name for peak

12:45 pm on 12 October 2011

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says she's pleased the Government has rejected a recommendation to call a nameless Central Otago peak Te Kohua Peak.

The proposal was put forward by a member of the public, endorsed by the Geographic Board and strongly supported by Ngai Tahu.

But the suggestion has been turned down by Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson.

The Geographic Board received 34 submissions objecting to Te Kohua Peak and two in support.

Ms Dean says the minister has given the community a chance to work together to name the peak.
