Bill acknowledges pardon of Whakatohea chief

A bill acknowledging the Government's formal pardon of the Te Whakatohea chief Mokomoko was introduced in Parliament on Wednesday.

Mokomoko was wrongly executed for the murder of the Reverend Carl Volkner in 1866.

The Crown first issued a pardon in 1992, but another was given by Government last month because the Mokomoko whanau felt it didn't restore their chief's mana.

Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples says the bill's introduction is just another step towards restoring the mana, character and reputation of Mokomoko and his descendants.
