Maori wanted more consultation on land and water strategy

The Tangata Whenua representative on a committee which helped develop a comprehensive land and water management strategy for Hawke's Bay, agrees with the thrust of what's proposed, but not how it's been put together.

The Hawke's Bay Regional Council's Environment Management Committee has recommended the 60 page strategy be adopted.

Marei Apatu from Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga, says he's appreciated having an input, but couldn't represent the views of all hapu.

He says the fact there hasn't been wide consultation with Maori, means they could justifiably feel marginalised.

Mr Apatu says for Maori land and water issues are the very ethos, and he would have liked to see a more holistic approach to the strategy.
