Two iwi signed agreements over governance of the Waikato River at Parliament on Wednesday.
Rotorua-based Te Arawa River Iwi Trust and Raukawa Settlement Trust in Tokoroa have been working with government departments for some time over co-management of the river.
Last December Te Arawa signed an agreement with the Crown over protection and restoration of the river.
Chairman Roger Pikia says the agreements signed on Wednesday are equally important but subtly different when it comes to how iwi engage with Te Puni Kokiri and the Minister of Maori Affairs.
He says three other accords being negotiated with other government departments should be signed off by early next year.
