Rangitikei lamb plant picket continues

8:07 am on 2 November 2011

About one hundred meatworkers, many of them Maori, are maintaining their picket outside the CMP Rangitikei lamb processing plant at Marton in the central North Island.

They've been in a dispute following negotiations for a new collective employment agreement.

The company served a lock-out notice on the meatworkers who refused to sign individual contracts.

Meatworkers' Union delegate Mary-ann Kaka says workers have been picketing outside the company for more than a week.

She says they've been offered a cut in wages of more than 25%, which union workers will never agree to.

CMP Rangitikei says it is currently in mediation with the union and both parties are keen to reach agreement so that the union employees can get back to work as soon as possible.
