Tainui leader endorses Maori Party policy

11:18 am on 2 November 2011

Tainui executive member Taitimu Maipi says he supports the Maori Party policy for iwi to be able to veto foreign investment in New Zealand.

The Maori Party says it wants to insert a treaty clause into the overseas investment legislation to give iwi first right of refusal on any land or asset sale.

Mr Maipi says he supports the idea because it acknowledges that Maori are equal treaty partners.

He says iwi should also have an opportunity to put their hands up when state assets are sold so they can become masters of their own destiny.
