Nelson City Council votes in favour of Maori ward

7:35 pm on 3 November 2011

Nelson City Council has become the first unitary authority to vote in favour of having a Maori ward within its boundary.

Councillors voted unanimously on Thursday in favour of a resolution, to create a ward in time for the 2013 local government elections.

Chief executive Keith Marshall says iwi have made it clear for some time that they'd like a voice at the council table.

He says the decision won't change the number of seats on council, but one councillor will be elected by those on the Maori electoral roll.
