Mahuta sells leadership credentials on home ground

6:51 am on 5 December 2011

Aspiring Labour Party deputy leader Nanaia Mahuta will be on home turf on Monday, when the leadership race is taken to party members in a series of hui throughout the country.

The Hauraki-Waikato MP is paired with top contender David Cunliffe against David Shearer.

The first of six leadership forums with the membership will be in Hamilton on Monday evening.

MS Mahuta says Labour's election night drubbing prompted her to bid for the party's number two spot.

She says the challenge ahead of the party is huge, and she's keen to work with David Cunliffe to present a new opportunity to the Labour Party.

Labour's new leaders will be elected on 13 December.
