The founder of Te Wananga O Raukawa wants the Crown to acknowledge kaupapa values, when measuring performance.
The Tertiary Education Commission has cut $2 million from the Otaki-based tertiary institution as a financial sanction, because only 43% of students finished their courses.
But Professor Whatarangi Winiata says the wananga has 10 kaupapa or values it adheres to.
He says the commission should note that 74% of kaupapa targets are being fulfilled, and look at how they contribute to the survival of Maori as a people.
Professor Winiata says it is unacceptable the commission has limited its assessment to four measures.
