Wananga o Raukawa launches iPhone application

7:10 pm on 13 December 2011

Students learning traditional Maori chants and oratory at the Otaki based Wananga o Raukawa, can now take their learning anywhere, using the organisation's new iPhone application.

The free application called "eWai", provides a combination of audio and visual cues and can be used on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch gadgets.

The tertiary institution's kaiwhakahaere or manager Bonnie Matehaere says she found it difficult as a student to memorise moteatea, including the hand actions which accompany the chants.

She says the wananga noticed many students were already using iPhone technology, and it made sense to develop a specific application to help them with their studies.

Ms Matehaere says there are plans to add more waiata or songs into the application, and to develop an Android version.
