Construction underway on Chathams housing

Ngati Mutunga o Wharekauri Iwi Trust says the construction of new houses and kaumatua flats on the Chathams is progressing well.

Earlier this year the Trust secured more than $800,000 of government funding to help build new accommodation for its people.

The funding matched money which the Trust raised.

Chairperson Deborah Goomes says the iwi-driven initiative will contribute to social well-being and community self esteem on the Chathams.

Trust secretary Ward Kamo says there's been huge progress since construction of the houses started about a fortnight ago.

He says all the framing is up and, barring any major hiccups, the houses should be finished by May 2012.

Ward Kamo says the Trust has enlisted the help of Ngati Mutunga locals on the Chathams, to decide who should live in the new accommodation.
