Top roles for Labour's Maori MPs

Some of Labour's Maori MPs have been given key roles in the party under new leader, David Shearer.

On Monday, Mr Shearer announced his top team for the Opposition front bench to take on the Government in Parliament.

Shane Jones takes a number of portfolios, including Maori Economic Development and Fisheries.

Nanaia Mahuta will take charge of the Associate Maori Affairs position.

On the backbenches, Parekura Horomia looks after Maori Affairs and Treaty Negotiations while Rino Tirikatene, the new MP for Te Tai Tonga, has been handed the Tourism portfolio.

For Mr Jones, it's a return to the front bench after being demoted last year for misusing his Parliamentary credit card.

The list MP says he didn't pressure the Labour leader for specific portfolios but did share with Mr Shearer what he would like do.
