Food and forestry businesses planning 'brand Maori'

A primary industries business group is keen to develop a 'brand Maori' - to market red meat, forestry and dairy and horticulture products to the world.

The Federation of Maori Authorities says the idea of a brand is still being discussed with its members assessing how they can improve financial returns.

FOMA chair Traci Houpapa says New Zealand has been selling the clean, green image for some time - something Maori could be part of.

She says Maori could be pushing the message that they're first nation, indigenous and unique to New Zealand.

Ms Houpapa says the industries would be able to start building on their cultural collateral, which the Maori sector provides for the benefit of the whole country.

She says marketing Maori products could be achieved through a brand or a logo, or tohu.
