Council to support case for sea water testing

2:10 pm on 25 December 2011

Gisborne District is to support an approach by Ngati Porou Fisheries for the Cawthron Institute to collect physical and biological data on the quality of sea water between Poverty Bay and East Cape.

Mayor Meng Foon says Ngati Porou aims to set up aquaculture projects one day and it's important the iwi has the best information about the region's coastal waters before it makes any decisions.

He says aquaculture will not only provide economic and environmental benefits for the iwi, but the whole community.

Mr Foon says the council agreed on 21 December to make an application to the Cawthron Institute in Nelson for a floating monitoring platform filled with scientific instruments to be located in the Gisborne- East Coast region.
