Families on Motiti island in the Bay of Plenty are waiting for laboratory results on a washed up shark, to shed some light on the effects of the oil from the Rena.
The Tauranga Moana and Te Moana-A-Toi iwi Forum are concerned about the food chain being contaminated, following the use of Corexit 9500 to break down oil from the spill.
The iwi says several species of fish washed up on the island's shores after the chemical was used and they want answers as to whether marine life have been affected.
