Court action threat over proposed SOE Act changes

Updated at 7:55 pm on 9 February 2012

The chair of the Waikato-Tainui executive warns legal action will be taken against the Crown if changes are made to partial state asset sale legislation.

Ten iwi consultation hui are scheduled to take place this month.

The first three have been held in Rotorua, Hamilton and Whanganui since Wednesday.

So far, iwi have clearly indicated they're opposed to changes to the State Owned Enterprises Act, in particular amending section nine, which protects treaty rights.

The head of Te Arataura, Tukoroirangi Morgan, says the clause must remain in its entirety, it shouldn't be configured, otherwise he warns court action may result.
