An iwi spokesperson says Tania Martin remains the chairperson of the Waikato-Tainui parliament, as long as an upcoming meeting on her marae confirms she's still a representative.

An election of officers was held on Sunday in Hopuhopu near Ngaruawahia.

The meeting was delayed due to protests by members of Ms Martin's Hiona marae.

A tribal spokesperson says there's division in the marae, with some people carrying signs saying the pa doesn't have any representatives.

He says that also spilled over into the hui where uncertainty surfaced over whether Ms Martin had a mandate from her Hiona.

He says, in order for Ms Martin to retain her tribal chairmanship role, her marae must hold an election and she must secure support as one of its representatives.
