King Country iwi say Landcorp farm not an option

Members of a King Country iwi occupying one of the Crafar farms near Benneydale say they fear the Government may offer them Landcorp farms which have no connection to the iwi.

Ngati Rereahu members began a protest on Monday on the property which was confiscated from them by the Crown in the 1880s.

The property is one of the 16 North Island farms offered to the Chinese company Shanghai Pengxin.

But the High Court on 15 February ordered Overseas Investment Office to reconsider its recommendation that the sale to Shanghai Pengxin be approved.

Iwi spokesperson Edward Moana-Emery says the Crown has a reputation for offering iwi Landcorp farms in settlements, even though the properties are not part of their ancestral whenua.

Mr Moana-Emery says that is not good for his iwi because that is not where their tupuna or ancestors lived or were buried.
