Ruatoki Maori immersion school rises from the ashes

6:33 am on 23 February 2012

A Maori immersion school in central Bay of Plenty is rising from the ashes after its gymnasium and other parts of the school were destroyed by fire in 2009.

Te Wharekura o Ruatoki has been through some major renovations over the last 18 months and the work will finally be finished next Thursday.

The kura is holding a blessing ceremony to open a new gymnasium named Mauri Tau along with a technology block.

The opening will take place at the school on 1 March with an early dawn ritual.
