A researcher says she was distressed to see the financial hardships faced by whanau in south Auckland.

Colleen Tuuta listened to eight whanau for the recent Families Commission report, Te Pumautanga o Te Whanau.

The report tells how families are able to be strong, despite their money woes.

Ms Tuuta says the study was distressing and an eye opener.

She says the way whanau managed their situations also stood out for her.

Ms Tuuta found they borrowed money or shared food with other whanau.

She says the families have very good survival skills.
