Cultural centre for Blenheim planned

The people of Rangitane iwi in Marlborough are considering building a cultural centre in Blenheim.

Hui around the rohe have called on iwi members to have input into the new venture which will provide a hub for cultural activities including the performing arts.

Omaka Marae manager Kiley Nepia says it is an initiative driven by Te Runanga a Rangitane o Wairau to help promote the iwi's profile in the region.

He says the cultural centre would not undermine marae in the rohe, but provide more options to showcase events such as kapa haka.

Mr Nepia says responses from the consultation hui, which began in September 2011, have been positive and that more meetings are planned.

He says the centre would be built on the old Grovetown Hall site just outside of Blenheim and that it provides an opportunity to give Blenheim a Rangitane identity.
