No indication whales have stranded again

8:47 am on 15 February 2015

The Department of Conservation says there is no indication that 60 long-finned pilot whales refloated at Farewell Spit yesterday have stranded again.

They were the last left alive of nearly 200 whales stranded on the spit, including many that continued to beach themselves after a first attempt to refloat them.

Department spokesperson Andrew Lamason said although three whales washed up dead overnight, they were not thought to be from yesterday's rescue.

He said staff and volunteers would spend the day keeping at eye out for the whales, and dealing with the carcasses on shore at low tide.
