Army on standby to assist

The Army remains on standby on Sunday, ready to assist with recovery work after the earthquake in Canterbury.
Prime Minister John Key says it is likely the army will be deployed on Monday, if not earlier, to give support.
Army transport has already been put to use. Eighty police reinforcements from Auckland were housed and fed at Burnham military camp on Saturday night.
Colonel Roger McElwain says he is awaiting a formal request from Civil Defence or the police.
He says 50 troops are on standby as a back-up security force for the police, as well as about 40 engineers and medics.
