McCully questions whether colonel will receive fair trial

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says there would be some obstacles for Fiji to overcome if it tries to get a former military officer extradited from New Zealand.

Lieutenant Colonel Ratu Tevita Mara is wanted on a sedition charge in Fiji and fled to Tonga in May.

He is currently visiting Australia on a Tongan passport and six-month visa and plans to visit New Zealand at the end of June.

Fiji Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says he plans to seek the extradition of Colonel Mara from every country he visits and has sent papers to Australia.

Mr McCully says New Zealand would follow due process in considering any extradition.

"In dealing with extradition requests, countries always have some regard for the prospect of a fair trial in the country to which the person would be sent and a look at their record for human rights abuses.

"I think that would raise some questions in relation to Fiji," he says.
