Long Range Weather

The MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Wednesday.

A ridge remains over most of the North Island during the weekend, while a disturbed westerly flow lies over the South Island. On Monday, the westerly flow strengthens, and spreads over the rest of the country as an active front moves north over southern and central New Zealand. The front weakens and becomes slow-moving over northern New Zealand on Tuesday, while another front moves onto the far south. This front moves over the South Island on Wednesday followed by cold southwesterlies.

Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, and Rotorua

Mainly fine over the weekend, but the odd late shower about the eastern Bay of Plenty ranges tomorrow. On Monday, cloudy periods increasing and northwesterlies developing. Showers on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Waikato, Waitomo, Taupo, Taumarunui, Taihape, Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu, and Horowhenua, Kapiti Coast

Cloudy periods at first, with patchy drizzle, mainly about high ground night and morning. Drizzle turning to rain from Taranaki southwards late Monday, and further north on Tuesday. Remaining unsettled with rain or showers through Wednesday. Northwesterlies, strong at times from Monday.

Gisborne, and Hawkes Bay

Mainly fine throughout the period. However, a few late showers about the ranges north of Napier tomorrow, and brief showers spreading from the west on Tuesday and Wednesday. Northwesterlies strengthening on Monday.

Wairarapa, including the Tararua District, Wellington, and Marlborough

Mostly fine today and tomorrow, but becoming cloudy inWellington and the Sounds tomorrow afternoon, with late drizzle. The drizzle turning to rain on Monday, and scattered falls elsewhere. Mainly fine on Tuesday. Some rain or showers on Wednesday, mainly about the ranges and Marlborough Sounds. Strong northwesterlies, gale at times in exposed places, easing for a time late Monday.

Nelson

Remaining fine tomorrow. Rain developing about the western ranges on Monday, and scattered falls further east, clearing in the evening and northerly winds turning southwest. Mainly fine Tuesday and Wednesday, but showers about the western ranges spreading further east for a time on Wednesday.

Buller, Westland, Fiordland, and the Southern Alps

Rain, with some heavy falls and isolated thunderstorms, spreading north to the Glaciers today, rain or drizzle at times further north. Remaining unsettled with periods of rain, heavy at times, until Wednesday, then easing to showers, and northerly windsturning cold southwest, with snow to low levels in the south.

Canterbury, Except the Alps

Generally fine with variable high cloud through Wednesday, but scattered rain spreading from the west at times on Monday. Northwesterlies inland, strong or gale at times with gusts 110 km/h from late tomorrow, and gusty northwesterlies spreading to coast at times, then dying away on Wednesday.

Otago, Except the Alps, and Southland

High cloud, with scattered rain spreading from the west at times, through Wednesday. Northwesterlies, strong or gale at times in exposed places, turning lighter westerly on Wednesday, and becoming colder.

Chatham Islands

Winds tending northerly today, and becoming fine tomorrow. Mainly fine on Monday with strengthening northwesterlies. Rain developing on Tuesday. Further rain Wednesday, and northwesterlies rising to gale.
