Long Range Weather

The MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Tuesday.
A trough moves north over the country during the weekend, preceded by a very strong northerly flow, and followed by colder southerlies. A ridge spreads over southern and central New Zealand on Sunday and Monday, while the trough becomes slow-moving to the east, with a low developing east of the North Island maintaining a southwest flow over northern regions. A disturbed westerly flow spreads north over the South Island on Tuesday.
Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay Of Plenty, Rotorua, WaikatoWaitomo, Taupo, Taumarunui and Taihape
Occasional light rain or drizzle spreading to most places today. Rain becoming heavier and more persistent on Sunday, then easing to showers and strong northerlies turning lighter southwest. Mainly fine on Monday, but showers in Coromandel and Bay of Plenty for a time and the odd shower further south. Fine on Tuesday apart from a few west coast showers.
Taranaki, Wanganui and Manawatu
Rain, more persistent in Taranaki with heavy falls there, easing to showers Sunday morning and gusty northerlies dying away. Cool southeasterlies developing late Sunday, and becoming fine in North Taranaki and Manawatu. Becoming fine everywhere on Monday with winds abating. Cloudy periods on Tuesday, with few showers in Taranaki.
Gisborne and Hawkes Bay
High cloud increasing on Sunday and rain spreading from the west, then clearing and northerlies dying away. Cool showery southerlies spreading north late Sunday and early Monday. Becoming fine south of Wairoa later on Mondayand elsewhere on Tuesday.
Wairarapa including the Tararua District, alse Horowhenua Kapiti Coast and Wellington
Rain spreading to most places today, with heavy falls about the Tararua Range. Northwesterlies rising to severe gale in exposed places places tonight. Rain clearing on Sunday morning and northerlies dying away. Cold southerlies and showers developing Sunday afternoon. Becoming fine on Monday. Mainly fine with northwesterlies on Tuesday.
Marlborough and Nelson
Rain becoming widespread this evening, and again for a time tomorrow evening. Northwesterlies rising to severe gale in exposed places this evening, easing tomorrow evening. Becoming fine Sunday morning and northwesterlies dying outthen cold southerlies and showers developing about the Marlborough coast, and southeasterlies and showers west of Motueka later. Becoming fine everywhere on Monday with light winds. Mainly fine on Tuesday.
Buller, Westland, Fiordland and the Southern Alps
Rain or showers, heavy at times, and thunderstorms south of Westportgradually clearing from the south on Sunday. Snow to low levels in Fiordland tomorrow. Mainly fine on Monday, but showers developing about the fiords. Showers spreading north on Tuesday, and turning to rain south of the Glaciers.
Canterbury except the Alps, and North Otago
High cloud with a few spots of rain clearing tomorrow evening, and northwesterlies, severe gale in exposed places, abating. An early change to cold showery southerlies on Sunday, with snow on the hills and ranges. Showers clearing Sunday afternoon and southerlies dying away. Mainly fine on Monday and Tuesday.
The remainder of Otago, and Southland
High cloud increasing, and rain in the west spreading elsewhere tomorrow. Northwesterlies, severe gale in exposed places, easing tomorrow morning. Cold southwesterlies later tomorrow, and rain becoming heavy for a time with snow lowering to 300 metres. Rain and snow clearing Sunday morning and southwesterlies dying away, but westerlies and a few showers near Foveaux Strait later. Mainly fine on Monday and Tuesday, but a few showers in the south.
Mainly fine today. A few showers tomorrow with northwesterlies strengthening.Rain on Sunday, easing to showers later and gale northwesterlies turning lighter southwest. Occasional showers and southerly winds on Monday and Tuesday.
