The MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Sunday.
A low moves across the lower South Island today, while a series of embedded fronts cross the rest of the country and move away to the southeast on Thursday. A deep low approaches New Zealand from the Tasman Sea late Thursday and is expected to cross the country on Friday, moving away to the southeast on Saturday, leaving a strong west to southwest flow over New Zealand. A front moves onto the lower South Island on Sunday. A Severe Weather Watch is in place for HEAVY RAIN for NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND and COROMANDEL PENINSULA.
Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula and Waikato
Rain spreading east this afternoon and evening, with some heavy falls from this evening through into Friday. Thunderstorms are possible on Friday, before easing to a few showers with a change to strong gusty westerlies, gale or possibly severe gale in exposed places. Showers clearing on Saturday and westerlies easing, then mainly on Sunday, but the odd shower possible for Northland.
Bay Of Plenty and Rotorua
Cloudy, with rain developing this afternoon or evening. Rain becoming heavy Thursday evening, with possible thunderstorms on Friday. A change to a few showers and gusty southwesterlies in the evening, gale or possibly severe gale in exposed places. Becoming fine Saturday morning and southwesterlies easing.Fine on Sunday with westerly breezes.
Waitomo, Taupo, Taumarunui, Taihape and Taranaki
Rain developing this afternoon. Rain becoming heavy and possibly thundery early Friday, then easing to occasional showers late afternoon or evening with a change to gusty westerlies, gale or possibly severe gale in exposed places.A few showers for the weekend, with westerlies easing on Saturday.
Gisborne and Hawkes Bay
Cloudy with isolated light showers, turning to rain tonight. On Friday, rain retreating to the ranges in the morning, and becoming mainy fine in the east.Heavy and possibly thundery falls likely about the ranges until evening, with northwesterlies strengthening, gusting severe gale in exposed places from evening. Mainly fine for the weekend, with gusty westerlies, gale or severe gale in exposed places, easing on at.
Wairarapa (including the Tararua District)
Cloudy, with scattered rain developing this evening. Rain becoming persistent about the ranges Friday morning with heavy and possibly thundery falls from evening. Gusty northwesterlies, severe gale in exposed places from Friday evening, easing on Saturday and the rain clearing. Fine on Sunday with northwesterlies.
Wanganui, Manawatu and Horowhenua Kapiti Coast
Cloudy, with scattered rain developing this afternoon or evening, turning to frequent showers Friday evening, some heavy and possibly thundery. A change to gusty westerlies Friday evening, gale or possibly severe gale in exposed places. Showers and gusty westerlies easing Saturday. A few showers and northwesterlies on Sunday.
Cloudy, with scattered rain developing this evening. Rain becoming widespread Friday evening, with some possible heavy falls. Becoming fine Saturday morning and through the weekend.
Nelson, Buller, Westland and Fiordland
Rain, easing in Buller and Nelson tonight, and elsewhere tomorrow morningthen clearing most by tomorrow evening. Rain returning overnight Thursday and early Friday, then clearing Nelson late Friday. Remaining mainly fine in Nelson for the weekend, but rain at times elsewhere, with heavy falls.
Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago and Southland
Cloudy. Rain developing this afternoon or evening, with snow above 700 or 800 metres inland, then clearing Thursday morning or afternoon. Rain returning Friday morning or afternoon, with some heavy falls possible in eastern Otago and snow to 700 metres inland Otago. Rain mostly clearing on Saturday, but a few showers remaining about the south coast. Mainly fine on Sunday, but scattered rain developing for Southland.
And for the CHATHAM ISLANDS
CloudY, with showers clearing this evening. Rain developing late Friday, and northeasterlies rising to gale. A change on Saturday to showers and gale westerlies, then showers and westerlies easing on Sunday.
