Long Range Weather

The MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Sunday.
A weak ridge lies over the North Island, and a complex trough is spreading onto the South Island from the west. The trough weakens as it moves onto the North Island on Friday, followed by a weak ridge over the South Island. The ridge moves northwards to the west of New Zealand over the weekend, leaving a shallow trough over much of the country.
Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Waitomo, Bay Of PlentyRotorua, Taupo, Taumarunui and Taihape
Extensive high cloud today. For the remainder of the period, long fine spellsand a few afternoon and evening showers, mostly inland with some possibly heavy.
Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu and Horowhenua Kapiti Coast
Cloudy periods today and tomorrow, and a few afternoon and evening showers about the eastern ranges tomorrow. Cloud increasing on Friday and a few showers developing, clearing Friday evening. Long fine spells over the weekend.
Gisborne and Hawkes Bay
Mostly fine with high cloud today, but isolated afternoon showers about the ranges. For the remainder of the period, long fine spells, and a few afternoon and evening showers inland, some possibly heavy.
Wairarapa including the Tararua District, and Wellington
Fine spells today and tomorrow, and a few afternoon and evening showers inland tomorrow, some possibly heavy. A few showers developing on Friday, then clearing from the south, and becoming fine with northerlies dying away. Mainly fine over the weekend.
Nelson and Buller
A few showers developing today, but remaining fine about the Nelson Bays. Showers turning to rain tomorrow, and scattered falls spreading to the Bays from afternoon. Rain easing to showers and increasing fine spells on Friday morning, becoming fine about the Nelson Bays. Mainly fine over the weekend.
Westland and Fiordland
Rain becoming patchy this evening, but becoming widespread again tomorrow afternoon, with some heavy falls, and possibly thunderstorms in Westland, then easing to showers at night. Showers becoming few and far between on Friday. Cloud increasing on Saturday, and rain developing south of the Glaciers. Rain at times on Sunday, mostly south of the Glaciers.
Marlborough and Canterbury
Cloudy periods today and tomorrow, and brief rain spreading north from tomorrow afternoon. Becoming fine Friday morning. Mostly fine over the weekend.
Otago and Southland
Scattered showers, some heavy and possibly thundery with hail this afternoonclearing tonight. Cloudy tomorrow, and rain from afternoon with some heavy falls, then clearing overnight. Becoming fine Friday morning, but a few afternoon showers in the east. High cloud increasing on Saturday. Mostly cloudy on Sunday, with scattered rain, mainly in the west and south.
Mostly cloudy throughout the period. A few showers clearing this evening. Drizzle at times over the weekend. Southwesterlies dying out today. Freshening northerlies tomorrow, easing on Saturday.
