The MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Monday.

A ridge moves off the North Island today and northwesterlies develop ahead of an approaching trough. The trough is expected to move slowly east over the country on Friday and early Saturday, followed by southwesterlies. Another trough moves eastwards over New Zealand on Monday.

Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Waitomo, TaumarunuiTaupo and Taranaki

Mainly fine today, except for a few late showers in Northland and Taranaki.Rain spreading east tomorrow, with some heavy falls, and possible thunderstorms in Northland. A few showers in Taranaki on Saturday, and rain easing elsewhere. Cloudy periods and a few showers on Sunday and Monday.

Bay Of Plenty and Rotorua

Mainly fine today. Rain developing tomorrow. Rain, with some heavy falls on Saturday, then gradually clearing on Sunday. Cloudy periods on Monday.

Gisborne and Hawkes Bay

Fine today. Rain developing tomorrow. Rain on Saturday, then gradually clearing on Sunday. Mainly fine on Monday.

Taihape, Wanganui, and Manawatu

Mainly fine today. Rain developing tomorrow and northerlies rising to galepossibly severe gale, in Taihape. Cloudy periods and a few showers for the remainder of the period.

Wairarapa including the Tararua District, Horowhenua Kapiti Coast and Wellington

Mainly fine today, except for the odd shower in Horowhenua Kapiti Coast and Wellington. Rain developing tomorrow, with some heavy falls, and northwesterlies rising to severe gale in exposed places in Wellington and Wairarapa, rain easing later. Cloudy periods and a few showers on Saturdaythen mainly fine on Sunday and Monday.

The western ranges of NELSON and BULLER

A few showers today. Rain tomorrow, with some heavy falls, clearing later.Cloud increasing on Saturday, with late drizzle in Buller. Occasional showers on Sunday. Showers turning to rain on Monday.

Westland, the Southern Alps and Fiordland

Rain spreading north today, with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms. Rain easing to showers in Fiordland tomorrow and clearing in Westland. Rain spreading north on Saturday, with some heavy falls in Fiordland. Rain on Sunday, easing to showers in Westland. Showers turning to rain on Monday, with some heavy falls possible in Fiordland.

The remainder of NELSON and MARLBOROUGH

Cloud increasing today. Rain developing tomorrow, with some heavy falls about the Nelson ranges, and northerlies rising to gale, possibly severe gale, in Marlborough, rain clearing later. Mainly fine for the remainder of the period.

Canterbury excluding the Southern Alps

Fine with high cloud today and northwesterlies rising to severe gale in exposed places. Scattered showers developing tomorrow, then clearing later.Mainly fine on Saturday. A few spots of early rain on Sunday, otherwise mainly fine for the remainder of the period.

Otago and Southland

Mainly fine today, except for scattered evening rain in Southland and Clutha.Scattered showers tomorrow, clearing later. Showers about the south coast on Saturday, turning to rain and spreading inland. Rain retreating to the south coast on Sunday and westerlies rising to gale there. Scattered rain in Southland and Clutha on Monday, and mainly fine elsewhere.

Chatham Islands

Mainly fine with strengthening northerlies today. A few showers and strong northerlies tomorrow. Rain at times on Saturday, and northerlies dying out for a time. Rain on Sunday, and winds turning strong westerly. Occasional showers and strong westerlies on Monday.
