The MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Wednesday.
The cold southwest flow over New Zealand eases during Monday as a ridge builds over the Tasman Sea. The ridge moves east across the country on Tuesday and Wednesday followed by a trough, which affects western and southern regions later on Wednesday.
Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula
Isolated showers, mainly in the north and west, turning to rain for a time tomorrow with some heavy falls, and possible thunderstorms in the west.Fine spells increasing on Monday. Remaining showers clearing early Tuesday. Cloudy periods increasing on Wednesday.
Bay Of Plenty and Rotorua
Mostly fine today. A period of rain tomorrow morning, then becoming fine tomorrow afternoon. Mainly fine on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with morning frosts in sheltered places.
Waikato, Waitomo, Taupo and Taumarunui
Fine spells and isolated showers for much of the weekend, but a period of rain tomorrow morning. Becoming fine on Monday. Remaining fine, with morning frosts, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Taihape and Taranaki
Fine spells and isolated showers at first. Becoming cloudy this evening, and a period of rain tonight, falling as snow on high level roads. Rain and snow easing to a few showers tomorrow morning. Becoming mostly fine Monday morningbut there may still be the odd snow shower about high level roads. Mainly fine on Tuesday. Cloudy periods increasing on Wednesday.
Wanganui, Manawatu and Horowhenua Kapiti Coast
Mainly fine today and tomorrow, but isolated showers turning to rain for time overnight, with snow possible on high level roads. Mostly fine with morning frosts on Monday and Tuesday. Cloudy periods on Wednesday.
Gisborne and Hawkes Bay
Mostly fine today and tomorrow, but isolated showers tomorrow, mainly about the ranges. Scattered showers on Monday, mainly near the coast, clearing and becoming fine. Mainly fine with morning frosts on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Wairarapa including the Tararua District, and Wellington
Mainly fine today. Showers and cold southerlies developing overnight. Showers becoming less frequent tomorrow, and mainly in Wairarapa, then becoming confined to coastal Wairarapa on Monday, and strong cold southwesterlies easing. Mainly fine with morning frosts on Tuesday. Cloudy periods on Wednesday.
Marlborough except the Kaikoura Coast, and Nelson away from the western ranges
High cloud increasing today, a period of rain this evening. Becoming fine overnight, then mainly fine with morning frosts until Wednesday. Cloudy periods in Nelson on Wednesday.
The western ranges of Nelson, also Buller and Westland
Rain spreading north today, with heavy and possibly thundery falls, then turning to showers, and clearing south of Greymouth. Remaining showers clearing from the south tomorrow. Mainly fine on Tuesday and Wednesday, with morning frosts inland. Cloud increasing on Wednesday, with rain or drizzle south of the Glaciers.
Kaikoura Coast and Canterbury
Showers spreading north today, possibly heavy with hail for a time, with a strong cold southerly change. Snow lowering to 400 metres in the north and 200 metres in the south before clearing from the south overnight. Mostly fine with morning frosts for the rest of the period, but showers near exposed coasts until early Tuesday, with snow to 300 metres on Banks Peninsula.
Otago, Southland and Fiordland
Showers today, with snow lowering to near sea level. Becoming fine in inland Otago and northern Fiordland overnight with severe frosts, occasional snow showers elsewhere. On Monday, showers becoming fewer and coastal with snow lifting, fine and frosty inland. Mainly fine with frosts on Tuesday. Rain developing in Fiordland on Wednesday, and brief scattered falls further east.
Northerlies strengthening today, a period of rain tonight. Southwesterlies and a few showers tomorrow. cold and showery on monday, with strong or gale Southwesterlies. showers becoming less frequent on tuesday and Southwesterlies easing. showers slowly clearing on wednesday.
