Long Range Weather

The MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Wednesday.
Moist easterlies are strengthening over the North Island as a complex trough approaches northern New Zealand from the west. Meanwhile, a high east of the South Island extends a ridge westwards. The trough over northern New Zealand weakens during Monday, and the high east of the South Island moves further away. The trough in the north moves away to the east on Tuesday and Wednesdaywhile the ridge over the South Island decays. Another complex low pressure system approaches from the west on Wednesday.
Northland, Auckland Northwards Coromandel Peninsula
Rain at first, with heavy falls in Northland spreading further south tomorrowespecially in the east. Easterlies rising to severe gale in exposed places. Rain gradually easing from the north to occasional showers tomorrow afternoon and early Monday, and winds turning lighter northerly then dying away. Occasional showers on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Waikato, Waitomo, Bay Of Plenty, Rotorua, Taupo, Taumarunui, Taihape and North Taranaki
High cloud increasing today. A few showers in western Bay of Plenty turning to rain tomorrow, and spreading elsewhere from afternoon. Strong gusty easterlies rising to gale in exposed places tomorrow. Rain easing on Monday and easterlies abating. A few showers on Tuesday and Wednesday, longer fine spells on Wednesday.
South Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu, Horowhenua Kapiti Coast and Wellington
Generally fine at first. Cloudy periods increasing later tomorrow. Mostly cloudy on Monday with a few falls of rain, especially south of Tawa. Becoming mostly fine on Tuesday and southerlies dying out. Mainly fine on Wednesday.
Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, and Wairarapa including the Tararua District
Mostly cloudy, with scattered showers turning to rain in Gisborne late tomorrow. Rain spreading further south on Monday, with some heavy falls, but generally only light rain or drizzle in Wairarapa. Rain clearing on Tuesday and easterlies dying out. Becoming fine on Wednesday morning.
Marlborough, North Canterbury, Christchurch and banks Peninsula
Mostly cloudy with drizzle at times through Monday, but afternoon fine breaks inland. Drizzle clearing on Tuesday and fine spells increasing. Cloudy periods on Wednesday. Easterly breezes dying out on Wednesday.
The remainder of Canterbury, Otago except Clutha, and also Nelson, Buller and Westland
Mostly fine apart from areas of fog and low cloud night and morning throughout the period. High cloud increasing in Otago on Wednesday. Winds mainly light.
Clutha, Southland and Fiordland
Mainly fine apart from areas of fog or low cloud night and morning until Tuesday. Becoming cloudy about the fiords on Tuesday and high cloud increasing elsewhere, northwesterlies developing. Rain about the fiords on Wednesdayand scattered falls spreading elsewhere later, northwesterlies dying away.
Mainly fine today and tomorrow, but low cloud night and morning. Cloudy periods on Monday and Tuesday. A few showers on Wednesday. Easterlies developing on Monday then dying away on Wednesday.
