Long Range Weather

The MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Saturday.
A large complex trough, with several embedded fronts and low centres, is slowly moving eastwards across New Zealand, followed by a weak, narrow ridge on Friday. Another large trough moves onto the country from the west on Saturday.
Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay Of Plenty and Rotorua, WaikatoWaitomo, Taumarunui, Taupo and Taranaki
Scattered showers, but a period of rain spreading from the west this afternoon and evening. Some heavy falls and squally thunderstorms with hail expectedespecially for Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Waitomo and Taranaki. Showers with squally thunderstorms and hail again tomorrow. Occasional showers on Thursday and Friday, but rain spreading from the west Friday night. Periods of rain on Saturday, with heavy and thundery falls in the west.
Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa (including the Tararua District)
The odd shower this afternoon, but a brief period of rain spreading from the west late this afternoon or evening. Some heavy falls possible about the Gisborne ranges. Rain or showers about the western ranges tomorrow, but only a few spots spreading further east. Mainly fine on Thursday and much of Friday.Scattered rain developing Friday night. Periods of rain on Saturday, easing in Hawkes Bay and Gisborne later in the day.
Taihape, Wanganui, Manawatu, Horowhenua Kapiti Coast and Wellington
Rain developing during this afternoon, with some heavy falls, and possible squally thunderstorms with hail for Manawatu and Horowhenua Kapiti Coast.Showers and squally thunderstorms with hail tomorrow, easing late in the day.Occasional showers on Thursday and much of Friday. Rain developing Friday night. Periods of rain on Saturday, with some heavy and thundery falls.
Nelson and Marlborough
Rain, with heavy falls and squally thunderstorms with hail spreading from the west this afternoon and evening, then becoming confined to the western ranges of Nelson tomorrow afternoon and remaining that way through Thursday and into Friday. Rain with heavy and possibly thundery falls about the Nelson ranges spreading elsewhere later Friday, then easing on Saturday.
Buller, Westland and Fiordland
Rain in Buller spreading into northern Westland this afternoon. Mainly fine further south, apart from a few showers about the fiords. Rain in the north easing tomorrow, then frequent showers spreading from the south in the afternoon and evening. Rain or showers on Thursday and Friday, clearing south of the Hokitika on Saturday.
Canterbury, Otago and Southland
Mainly fine, but scattered rain developing in northern Canterbury tonightclearing by tomorrow afternoon. Further south, scattered rain or showers spreading northwards tomorrow afternoon and evening. Occasional rain in Southland and Clutha on Thursday, with only a few showers elsewhere. Rain or showers retreating to the south on Friday, however, further scattered rain spreading from the north Friday night. Rain becoming widespread on Saturdaywith some heavy falls possible in eastern Canterbury and Otago, and snow lowering to 800 metres.
Occasional rain today and tomorrow, turning to showers on Thursday. Rain with heavy falls developing on Saturday and northeasterlies possibly rising to gale.
