Towns are isolated and thousands have been evacuated amid major flooding across huge parts of New South Wales and Victoria with residents bracing for more heavy rain on Saturday night.
In the west of Sydney, 1900 people have been ordered to evacuate from the Hawkesbury Nepean Valley, and 1500 people are still not allowed to return to their homes in the rural towns of Goulburn, Cooma and Cowra.
The State Emergency Service says there have been falls of more than 50 millimetres in some areas.
The ABC reports that a major flood peak of nine metres is forecast at Gundagai on Saturday night.
In Wagga Wagga, 200 residents of low lying areas of the city have been warned of an expected nine metre peak that could arrive on Sunday night.
Evacuation warnings are in place for the Goodradigbeee and Goobarragandra Rivers and low lying areas along the Tumut River at Tumut.
State Emergency Service Commissioner Murray Kear says three quarters of the state is flood-affected.
"[It is] unprecedented in the amount of rain over a long duration," he said.
Meanwhile, towns in Victoria's north-east are stocking up with supplies with up to 100 millimetres of rain expected in some parts tonight.
The army is on standby to help sandbag properties.
Katamatite, north of Shepparton, is now isolated while Tungamah can only be accessed via four wheel drive in the south.
