A military investigation into the burning of copies of the Koran at the Bagram base in Afghanistan last month, has found that several enlisted soldiers had misinterpreted an order to dispose of the Muslim holy books.

The investigation found that five US soldiers were responsible for confiscating the Korans and other religious materials at a detention facility there and dumping them in a pit used to incinerate rubbish.

More than 30 Afghan civilians and six American troops have been killed in subseqent demonstrations.
