Romney wins in Washington

7:04 pm on 4 March 2012

The front runner for the Republican presidential nomination in the United States, Mitt Romney, has won the primary election in Washington state.

With more than 60% of the votes counted, Mr Romney had a double digit lead over his nearest two rivals Rick Santorum and Ron Paul who battled for second place.

Correspondents say the victory is yet another boost to the Romney campaign in the run up to super Tuesday this week when 10 more states hold primaries.

Republicans are seeking a nominee to challenge President Barack Obama in the 6 November general election.
