Small tsunami on Japan coast

9:18 am on 15 March 2012

A minor tsunami has hit Japan's north-eastern coastline after a strong earthquake rocked the region.

The 20cm centimetre wave followed a 6.9-magnitude quake that prompted local authorities to issue an evacuation warning for coastal residents.

Japan's meteorological agency had initially said the tsunami could be as high as 50cm, but United States monitors say there was no Pacific-wide tsunami threat.

Just over a year ago, a 9.0 earthquake triggered a huge tsunami that killed more than 19,000 people in the same region.
