Tropical cyclone weakens in Western Australia

9:45 am on 18 March 2012

Residents of Western Australia's Pilbara regions have emerged from a night of wild weather to assess the damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Lua.

The cyclone crossed the coast north of Port Hedland as a category-four system on Saturday afternoon, but later weakened to category-two strength.

There are reports of extensive damage at the small community of Pardoo, while Nullagine, Newman and Marble Bar were also in the firing line overnight.

Recovery teams are travelling to the remote Pilbara towns on Sunday morning to assess the damage.

The Bureau of Meteorology says it is possible Lua will generate destructive wind gusts in excess of 125 kilometres an hour on Sunday.

A red alert - in effect, a lockdown - is still in place for inland parts of the east Pilbara; people are being advised to remain in shelter or go to shelter immediately.
