Fire rages at Britain's biggest cemetery

6:30 am on 28 March 2012

Britain's largest cemetery is on fire as the "tinder box dry conditions" sparked wildfires.

The blaze is raging over seven hectares of the 200-hectare Brookwood Cemetery near Woking in Surrey.

About 40 firefighters and six fire appliances plus other units are currently battling the fire which started just after 2pm on Tuesday, PA reports.

The cause is not yet known.

The cemetery is so large it has its own station. It was laid out in 1854 as the London Necropolis and is still in use.
