Floods hit Fiji

9:45 pm on 30 March 2012

Flash flooding has cut highways and forced evacuations in Fiji, with residents sheltering from rising waters on rooftops as authorities scramble to find rescue boats.

Heavy rains caused rivers to burst their banks in the west of the main island Viti Levu on Friday.

Meteorologists say water levels are higher than those experienced during a six-ay deluge in January when there were fatalities.

Police say they are not aware of any deaths in the latest disaster, which has cut off the town of Nadi, home to Fiji's international airport, as well as other centres including Ba, Lautoka, Rakiraki and Sigatoka.

Flights to and from Nadi have been cancelled.

The disaster management office, Dismac, says a massive number of people are stranded on rooftops awaiting rescue and appealed for anyone with a boat to help relief efforts.

The office has opened 11 evacuation centres to cope with the hundreds affected by the floods.

Dismac director Pajiliai Dobui says the flooding is at similar levels to those in 2009.

He says areas which have never been flooded before have been inundated with water and the rescue efforts are continuing in the dark to rescue people still isolated in buildings or on rooftops.

High tide was due at midnight on Friday.

The National Weather Forecasting Centre is predicting the rain would continue until at least Sunday.
