Somali sport officials killed

12:00 pm on 5 April 2012

Somalia's Olympic committee chief and football figures are among eight people killed by a suicide bomber in Mogadishu.

Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali was present when the explosion occurred at a newly re-opened national theatre, but it is understood he was unhurt.

A female suicide bomber belonging to the Al-Shabab group is reported to have carried out the attack on Wednesday.

The event was to mark the first anniversary of Somali television. The theatre had closed in the early 1990s as Somalia descended into civil war and was reopened only last month.

Somali Olympic Committee president Aden Yabarow Wiish and Somali Football Federation chief Said Mohamed Nur were both killed.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter said he knew both men personally and

they would be sorely missed.
