The United States is to ease some sanctions against Myanmar, also known as Burma.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says some travel and financial restrictions will be relaxed, with political leaders allowed to visit the US.

Mrs Clinton says the United States will also take steps to send a full ambassador there.

The National League for Democracy headed by Aung San Suu Kyi won 40 out of 45 seats in by-elections on Sunday.

ASEAN leaders on Wednesday called for all sanctions on Myanmar to be lifted immediately to help the country's political and economic development.
