China jails activist

8:22 pm on 10 April 2012

A court in Beijing has sentenced the disabled activist lawyer Ni Yulan to more than two years imprisonment for provoking trouble and destroying property.

Her husband received a shorter sentence.

Ms Ni has clashed with the authorities over her defence of people forced from their home to make way for real estate development.

Both deny the charges which their lawyers say are aimed at silencing the couple.
