Torture, murder during last years of British Empire

9:52 pm on 18 April 2012

Archives suggesting that British ministers were aware of torture and murder in the last years of the British Empire were made available to the public on Wednesday.

The files detail British operations against Mau Mau rebels in Kenya and communist insurgents in Malaya in the 1950s.

The documents show that British officials misled the United Nations about long-established families who were expelled from the Chagos Islands to make way for an American military base on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.
