Afghan intelligence agency, the NDS, says it has arrested five Taliban militants who were planning to carry out a huge attack in the capital, Kabul.
An intelligence agency spokesman said three of the men detained were Pakistani citizens, while two were Afghans.
They were caught with ten tonnes of explosives in a truck.
The explosives were found stuffed into 400 bags and hidden under piles of potatoes in the back of a truck on the city outskirts.
The spokesman said the men had received training from members of the Pakistani Taliban who have strong links with the Afghan Taliban.
