Poachers killed in Kenya

4:38 am on 22 April 2012

Officials in Kenya say rangers have killed five poachers in a clash in the Rift Valley and confiscated 50kg of elephant tusks and weapons.

The Kenya Wildlife Service says two rangers were wounded.

The service says the latest deaths bring to 11 the number of poachers killed this year.

Poaching in Kenya has declined significantly since the 1980s and 1990s when gangs nearly decimated its elephant and rhino populations, but there has been an upsurge in recent years.
