Forum group heading to Fiji

3:15 pm on 30 April 2012

New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully is travelling to Fiji on Monday as a member of the Pacific Islands Forum ministerial contact group on Fiji.

The group maintains contact with Fiji over its return to democracy.

Fiji was suspended from the forum three years ago after the interim regime reneged on a 2007 promise to hold elections.

Mr McCully says the visit will enable the group to resume direct dialogue with Fiji after a significant interval.

Mr McCully says the meeting comes after a number of positive developments in Fiji, including a decision to begin voter registration, establishment of a Constitutional Commission and the start of public dialogue on the shape of the constitution on which elections can be held.

However, the regime in Suva maintains that it will not hold elections before September 2014.
