Scalping in NT

6:31 am on 6 May 2012

A man has been scalped in a remote part of the Northern Territory in Australia.

Police say between 50 and 70 people were involved in a disturbance near health clinic in Yuendumu on Saturday morning.

Officers were pelted with rocks as they tried to intervene. Afterwards they found a man and a woman had been beaten with a blunt object.

Superintendent Peter Gordon says the man's injuries are horrific.

The ABC reports the man and the woman were flown to Alice Springs hospital.

Police say the incident was part of an ongoing feud in the community, which is 300km north-west of Alice Springs. Fifteen additional officers have been flown in.
