Cabbages sprayed with formaldehyde

Vegetable sellers in China are reported to have been caught spraying cabbages with a formaldehyde solution to keep them fresh in transit.

Formaldehyde is a toxic cancer-causing compound.

The Xinhua news agency says the practice has been common in eastern China for several years, as most farmers can't afford refrigerated trucks.
