Chelsea have won the Champions League final for the first time, defeating former winners Bayern Munich 4-3 on penalty kicks.

The teams had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and there was no futher score after extra time.

Bayern, playing in their home stadium, laid siege to Chelsea's goal for most of the game and appeared to have won it when Thomas Mueller made the breakthrough with an 83rd minute header past goalkeeper Petr Cech.

With two minutes remaining, Chelsea earned their first corner and when the ball was swung in, Didier Drogba equalised with a header.

Drogba conceded a penalty in the third minute of extra-time for a clumsy foul on Franck Ribery, but former Chelsea player Arjen Robben saw his penalty saved by Cech in the Chelsea goal.

In the shootout, Drogba was the hero when he buried the winning penalty.

Chelsea are the sixth British team to win Europe's premier club competition, but the first from London.
