Prison sentence for spycam student

1:06 pm on 22 May 2012

A former New Jersey university student has been sentenced to 30 days in prison, after he spied on his room-mate's sexual encounter with another person.

The BBC reports the case drew national attention to cyber-bullying after Tyler Clementi, 18, committed suicide after he was filmed kissing another man in a dorm room in September 2010.

Dharun Ravi, 20, was ordered to pay $US10,000 towards a group that assists victims of hate crimes, and to serve a three-year period of probation and complete 300 hours of community service.

In addition, he has to complete a programme on cyber-bullying and alternative lifestyles.

Handing down sentence on Monday in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Judge Glenn Berman said he had not heard Ravi apologise once.

Judge Berman added that he did not believe Ravi had acted out of hate for Clementi, but said he had been guilty of "colossal insensitivity".

He also berated Ravi for attempting to cover-up the crime, including deleting text messages, tweets and trying to influence a witness.
