Lady Gaga cancels Indonesia concert

8:17 pm on 27 May 2012

The popstar, Lady Gaga, has cancelled a concert in Indonesia, following angry protests by Islamist groups.

Indonesia police had initially refused to issue a permit for the American singer unless she toned down her performance.

The BBC reports that the hardline Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) had threatened to try to stop Lady Gaga getting off the plane.

Indonesia is officially secular but has more Muslims than any other country.

More than 50,000 tickets had been sold for the 3 June event. Promoters said they would offer refunds.

The lawyer for the concert promoters Minola Sebayang said Lady Gaga's management team called off the Jakarta show because they were concerned about security threats.
