At least 14 prisoners are still at large after a prison in the Afghan province of Sar-e Pol was attacked by the Taliban.
Three inmates were killed and 28 injured in gun battles on Thursday night.
A hole was blown in an outer wall shortly after darkness fell and attacks launched from three directions. About 30 prisoners fled, but officials 16 have been recaptured.
The Taliban claims 170 prisoners escaped.
More than 470 inmates at a prison in Kandahar escaped through a tunnel last April.
