Australian horse Black Caviar won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in a photo finish at Royal Ascot in Britain.

Racing outside Australia for the first time, she was almost caught at the end of the six-furlong sprint by Moonlight Cloud and Restiadargent, but held on to win by a head for jockey Luke Nolen and Melbourne trainer Peter Moody.

The ABC reports the victory is the crowning achievement of a record-breaking career for the Australian mare which has now won 22 consecutive starts.

Around 10,000 Australians wearing salmon with a black polka dot pattern to match Black Caviar's colours were at Ascot to witness the race on Saturday.

Even the Queen took the opportunity to meet the mare afterwards.

The Diamond Jubilee Stakes prize money was £222,800 ($A347,853.24). Black Caviar's total prize money earnings are $A6.3 million.
