Eight Czechs have been killed in a bus crash in central Croatia.

Forty four others were injured when the bus hit a crash barrier on a motorway and turned over at about 4.30am on Saturday.

The crash happened on the Zagreb-Split motorway, about 230km south of Zagreb.

Injured passengers were taken to hospital in the town of Gospic and some of the most seriously hurt were taken by helicopter to Zagreb.

A travel agency spokesman said all the passengers were Czech nationals.

The accident is the most serious involving a Czech bus since a crash in March 2003 near the Czech town of Nazidla, when 20 people were killed.
