In Australia, the editors-in-chief of the Fairfax-owned Melbourne paper The Age and Sydney Morning Herald newspapers have quit.

The Age editor Paul Ramadge told staff this on Monday afternoon that he is standing down.

His counterpart at The Sydney Morning Herald, Peter Fray, has also stepped down.

Sydney Morning Herald editor Amanda Wilson has also quit but reportedly says her decision was not related to recent turmoil at the company.

The company last week announced plans to axe 1,900 staff, close two major printing presses and downsize its flagship newspapers to tabloids.
