Scientists are unable to establish what caused the death of green sea turtles at Upstart Bay, south of Townsville in north Queensland.
An aerial survey found 70 turtles, mostly adult females, died this month.
All were well nourished, but the Environment Department says live turtles in the area are obviously sick and disoriented. Toxicology results are awaited.
